Swarm (CR +6)

"Swarm" is an acquired template that can be added to a collection of hundreds of the same creatures acting as a single creature. The swarm template can be applied to any creature that has an Intelligence score of 2 or less, or is mindless.

Racial Traits


Standard Traits

  • CR: +6 (129 CP total)
  • Hit Dice: The swarm adds 6 Hit Dice to the base creature's total Hit Dice. These HD stack with the base creature's HD to determine the number of ability score increases, feats, racial feats, skill ranks, skill proficiency increases, and any abilities or traits that scale off of the creature's total HD. (0 CP)

Defense Racial Traits

  • Combat Maneuver Immunity: The swarm cannot be targeted by bull rush, dirty trick, disarm, drag, grapple, reposition, steal, sunder, or trip combat maneuver or its effects. (36 CP)
  • Damage Immunity: The swarm is immune to piercing and slashing damage. (8 CP)
  • Damage Resistance: The swarm gains blundgeoning resistance 5. This resistance increases by 5 at every 5th Hit Die. If the swarm already has blundgeoning resistance, it increases by 6. (2 CP)
  • Grapple: The swarm never gains the grappled condition. (2 CP)
  • No Discernible Anatomy: The swarm is not subject to critical hits, flanking, and precision damage. (10 CP)
  • No Dying State: The swarm is immune to the disable and dying conditions, and disperses into individual base creatures at 0 hp. A swarm rendered unconscious by means of nonlethal damage becomes disorganized and dispersed, and does not reform until its hit points exceed its nonlethal damage. (-1 CP)
  • Target Immunity: The swarm cannot be targeted by any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures. (4 CP)

Offense Racial Traits

  • Automatic Attack: The swarm does not need to make attack rolls and automatically hits with its attacks and combat maneuvers. It can never miss, nor make critical hits. The target of a swarm's ranged attack can make a Reflex save for half damage at a DC 10 + 1/2 of the swarm's total Hit Dice + its Dexterity modifier. (10 CP)
  • Distraction: The swarm can nauseate the creatures that it damages. Any living creature that takes damage from it is nauseated for 1 round; a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 creature’s HD + creature’s Con modifier) negates the effect. (4 CP)
  • Ignore Concealment: The swarm's attacks ignores concealment. (4 CP)
  • Ignore Cover: The swarm's attacks ignores cover up to total cover. (4 CP)
  • Multiplied Attack: The damage of the swarm's attacks increases by 6 size categories. (36 CP)
  • Space: The swarm's space is increased by 5 size categories. (10 CP)

Other Racial Traits

  • Area of Effect Vulnerability: The swarm receives 50% more damage from attacks and effects that target an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells, except for mind-affecting affects is the swarm has an Intelligence score and the hive mind trait. (-4 CP)
  • (Optional) Hive Mind: The swarm may possess a hive mind which controls all of its constituent creatures. If it does so, then it loses its target immunity to mind-affecting spells and effects.
  • Occupy Same Space: The swarm can move in and out, and occupy the same space as another creature of any size without any impediment, although it provokes an attack of opportunity if it does so. (2 CP)
  • Shapeable Space: If the swarm's space occupies more than one 5-foot square. It can shape its space as it desires as long as all squares are contiguous. (2 CP)
